How to build stamina for dancing

How to dance longer without the legs going, what to train between classes, and how dancing counts in the app.

The movement

How to do one properly.

Every rep the same shape, so the numbers mean the same thing on day thirty as on day one.

  1. 1

Warm up with easy movement until your body feels loose and your breathing has lifted.

  2. 2

Keep your knees soft and your weight over the balls of your feet, so the floor never catches you flat.

  3. 3

Breathe with the music rather than holding it through the hard phrases.

  4. 4

Between classes, walk, run or skip. Dance stamina is cardio with better posture.

  5. 5

Calves, hips and feet get their own work: rises, lunges and balance, a few minutes most days.

The way up

How to build stamina for dancing

Rung 1

30 minutes

A class, or half an evening out. Enough to count.

Rung 2

60 minutes

A full class without sitting one out.

Rung 3

Two hours

A rehearsal, a social night, a wedding. Still moving at the end.

Two sessions a week of something that lifts the heart rate for twenty minutes straight: a run, a skipping session, a brisk hill. The class is the skill; this is the engine under it.

Calf rises every day, twenty slow ones on a step. Dance legs go at the calves first.

How it is counted

On the board, however it got there.

No watch counts dancing, so nobody's does. Say it out loud in the app or type it in, and it lands the same as a synced session.

Questions

Asked about dancing

How is dancing counted?

In minutes. Log the class or the night, or let an Apple Watch or Health Connect send it.

Does a night out count?

If you danced through it, yes. Be honest about the standing-around minutes; the board is only as good as what you log.

Does it count from my watch?

No watch counts dancing, so nobody's does. Say it out loud in the app or type it in, and it lands the same as a synced session.

Is it free?

Yes. The athlete app is free: logging, challenges and every guide on this site. Coaches pay for their workspace; the people they coach do not.
